아이들이 짐을 덜어준 새 학교,
EXR Progressive School 완공식 현장

캄퐁참의 스나 칸달 마을에는 플랜 캄보디아와 EXR의 도움으로 2008년 12월 12일 새로운 초등학교가 설립되었다. 새 학교가 생기면서 학생들과 마을 사람들의 얼굴에는 함박웃음이 피어났다. 플랜코리아와 (주)EXR KOREA의 지원으로 이 마을에는 최초로 6개 반으로 구성된 학교가 생겼다. 학교의 완공식을 축하하기 위해 학생들과 자원봉사자, 지역사회 공무원, EXR 임직원과 플랜직원들이 참석하였다. 새로 설립된 초등학교는 공부를 하기 위해서 멀리 있는 다른 마을의 학교에 가야했던 380여 명의 마을 어린이들에게 교육의 기회를 제공하게 되었다.

“우리 마을에 생긴 이 새로운 학교 덕분에 예전처럼 먼 거리를 통학할 필요가 없어져서 매우 기쁘게 생각합니다. 저는 훌륭한 사람이 되기 위해 열심히 공부할 것이며 우리나라의 발전을 위해서도 노력할 것입니다.” - 학생대표 릭
스나 칸달 마을의 주민 콕 치호운은 그동안 아이들은 다른 마을에 있는 학교를 다니기 때문에 약 1시간 정도를 걸어다녔다고 했다. 그는 새로운 학교 덕분에 이제 아이들이 5분만에 학교에 갈 수 있게 되었다며 밝은 미소를 지었다.
실제로 이 마을의 몇몇 부모들은 학교가 멀기 때문에 등하교길에 발생할 수 있는 불의의 사고에 대한 걱정으로 자전거를 타고갈 수 없는 어린 아이들이 학교에 가는 것을 허락하지 않았다.
“학교에 가야하는 나이임에도 어린 아이들은 장거리 통학을 이유로 학교에 다니기를 꺼려했습니다. 가까운 거리에 새로운 학교가 생긴 만큼 더 많은 아이들이 학교에 다닐 수 있기를 희망합니다.” - 교장 도웅 시나
한편 새로 설립된 초등학교는 어린이들이 공부하기에 쾌적한 환경을 위해 운동장과 화장실 시설, 식수시설까지 적절하게 갖추고 있다.

Some 300s pupils, community people, local authority, EXR Company representatives and Plan staffs came to cheer the official inauguration of the new 6-classroom primary school, the very first school in the area funded by EXR Company through Plan Korea. The primary school will provide study opportunity to approximately 380 village pupils who previously had to travel distant road to study in the other villages’ schools. “Children are supposed to have essential rights such as health and education. You are our hope in the global world; we wish Snar Kandal primary school will help make your dream come true and give you hope,” EXR Director Chang Soo Park addressed the occasion. Sitting on a chair and holding her prepared speech, Leak, a student representative, read: “Having this new school in my village, I don’t have to travel long distance to my old school. I’m very happy. I will study hard to be a good citizen and help develop my country.” According to Kok Chhoun, a Sna Kandal villager, his children have to travel 3 km to study in another village; it takes them nearly an hour by walking. “Having this village primary school, my kids will need only 5 minutes to arrive school,” said the villager with optimistic grin on his face. Some parents dare not allow their small children who cannot ride bike to go to school due to the long distance and some fears of unexpected accident along the way. Doung Sina, the school director, said, “Small children, despite their ample school age, don’t want to go to school; the main cause behind this is the distant walking. With this This new school is also properly equipped with playground and latrines to bolster child-friendly study environment.
